Art conservation is adapting to meet the new challenges of preserving contemporary art. Questions of dematerialization, technological obsolescence, artist intent and acceptable change are major issues encountered by conservators who deal with art pieces containing time-based media or unstable materials. Multi-disciplinary research in conservation as well as tools and solutions currently in use will be discussed.

Vincent Dion is currently completing his Master in Art Conservation degree at Queen’s University, specializing in the care of paper objects, photographic materials and new media. He has a B.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry from Université de Montréal and has worked at the AGO and the National Gallery.
