The Emancipated Spectator: The Possibilities of Performance in Canadian Art



Madalen Nicholls




Born and raised in B.C., Madalen Nicholls is currently studying Art History, Philosophy and German at the University of Toronto. She plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Critical Theory and Creative Research abroad, working towards a career writing about art. In her paper Nicholls examines the spectator/spectacle relationship in Canadian performance art through the theories of Jaques Rancière, one of the most important contemporary philosophers, with special attention to his notion of emancipation.  Artists discussed will include Ken Lum, Rebecca Belmore, Nina Arsenault and Jin-me Yoon.
