Winter 2014 Classes Spotlight: Instructors Erna de Vries and Kendra Spurgeon

The Grimsby Public Art Gallery is focused on creating unique, relevant and educational programming both for the larger community and for our artist community. It is our goal to create a sense that art is for everyone and is pertinent in the lives of our community members. Art is integral to the overall well-being and vitality of any community and this is highlighted through our programming.

Our Spotlight this week is on two instructors who put their hearts into what they do.  Two artist educators who bring a wealth of experience and care to each of the classes they teach. Erna and Kendra bring care to their practice, in their own artistic practices as well as in the classroom.  Both instructors teach with compassion and truly make art fun and accessible.

Instructor Erna de Vries B.A., B.Ed.

Workshop: Encaustic Workshop

Erna has been an art educator for the past 35 years,  recently re-directing her attention on developing mixed media and encaustic painting techniques.

Born in the Netherlands, Erna immigrated in 1957 with her family to the Hamilton, Ontario area where she now resides with her husband whose photography
has been utilized in her photo transfers.

As a full-time high school art teacher she also developed curriculum for the visual arts until her retirement in 2011. Over the years she organized art shows, conducted workshops for educators, judged fine arts competitions and created artworks for the private sector.  She is a member of a variety of art organizations including EAI, IEA and the AGH. She obtained her B.A. in Art/Art History from McMaster University in Hamilton and her B.ED from Queen’s University in Kingston, and took a variety of related art courses for certificate programs.
