Spotlight on the Gallery Shop

Raku pottery originated in Japan in the 16th century.  Over the last 50 years in the western world, the process has metamorphosed in to a very different but exciting and beautiful process.  Grimsby artist Lisa Skog creates not only one-of-a-kind dishes, but she also incorporates Raku in to clocks, wall art and jewellery.

Necklaces make extremely affordable gifts at $10 a piece!

Please note that Raku fired ware is porous and generally unsuited for functional use.  It should be treated as a decorative art piece and as such should not be placed in the dishwasher or be exposed to direct sunlight or very high humidity.

Opportunity for Local Artists

LOCAL PRODUCE 2011: ON ICE

Local Produce, the Grimsby Public Art Gallery’s bi-annual show and sale of local talent, will be held this fall from November 5 – December 4. The 2011 theme, On Ice, encourages artists to be inspired by winter sports. Ice-skating, hockey, skiing, sledding – or maybe just a good old-fashioned snow-ball fight – it is hard to be Canadian without experiencing some outdoor winter activities, even if we do it from the comfort of a warm studio!  The Niagara region offers a wealth of opportunities for winter fun, from spectacular frozen water-falls on the escarpment to children in brightly coloured parkas playing in the snow to apr├Ęs-ski in front of a roaring fire – and we know that our talented regional artists have recorded it all. It may not be winter wonderland weather yet when the show opens on November 5th, but the snow may well fly before December 4th so lace up your skates, wax your skis, pull on your mittens and enjoy!

Local Produce: On Ice is a unique opportunity for regional artists to show off their best work – and help the gallery raise some much needed funds at the same time. An artist may submit 1 or 2 works to this non-juried show, but due to space constraints the curatorial staff may choose not to include both works in the exhibition. All works will be for sale by silent auction, with bidding on-going until the culminating event on December 4; the artist may choose to donate the entire selling price of the work to the gallery or may split the proceeds (details below).  All media are welcome, in 2 or 3 dimensions.

If you are interested, please download the submission criteria and entry form from the Town of Grimsby webpage http://www.town.grimsby.on.ca/Artist-Opportunities/ or drop by the Gallery to pick one up.

* Local Produce is open to artists from Hamilton and the Niagara Region *
